CST Universal Pictures presents a film directed by Paul Greengrass and written by Greengrass and Luke Davies, based on the novel by Paulette Jiles. Rated PG-13 (for violence, disturbing images, mature thematic material and some strong language). Running time: 118 minutes. Available Friday on demand. If we were to conduct a poll of the most trusted actors in America, I’d argue Tom Hanks would be near the top of that list and Hanks is perfectly cast as an 1870 news anchor of sorts in Paul Greengrass’ gritty and visceral and deeply resonant “News of the World,” a rough-and-tumble Texas road-trip movie that plays like a hybrid of the John Wayne movies “The Searchers” and “True Grit” and even reminded me a little of George Clooney’s recent epic “The Midnight Sky.” ....
People who watch movies with Tom Hanks in them are usually there more because of Tom Hanks than the movie. With the exception of his frightening killer in "Road to ....
comments News of the World is a benign western that reunites Captain Phillips director Paul Greengrass with actor Tom Hanks. Here, Hanks is playing another captain, Capt. Jefferson Kyle Kidd, a Civil War veteran first seen plying his trade reading the news to townsfolk for money in Wichita Falls, North Texas, 1870. Kidd travels from town to town telling stories from the newspapers to help people escape their troubles. He is a newscaster as performer, and at times he plays a comedian, making folks laugh at the absurdity in the far-flung world. What he is not is a charlatan. Which is a shame; it would be interesting to see some ambiguity or even an agenda with Kidd s work. (The film gets at politics briefly, when he reports about President Grant, who is booed by some feisty Texans). ....
There’s an old-fashioned aesthetic in “News of the World” that might make it easy to dismiss as a “dad movie, something that plays on TNT in regular rotation for the next decade (which it almost certainly will), but this kind of finely-calibrated genre film is harder to pull off than it looks. There’s an attention to detail in every corner of this movie, including not just the period recreation but everything from James Newton Howard’s lovely score to Tom Hanks’ subtle performance. There’s something comforting about giving yourself over to an undeniably talented group of artists for two hours and just letting them tell you a story. That’s what this will be for many this holiday season. Yes, it’s relatively predictable and arguably a little thin in terms of ambition, but it’s also refined and nuanced in ways that these films often aren’t. Everyone here is at the top of their craft from the character actors who populate the ensemble to the two leads at its ....
muddled News Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd is an empty man. A Civil War veteran without a family, he wanders the Western Plains, reading stories from the many newspapers he has in tow, bringing them to audiences hungry for diversion. He ekes out a living on the meager donations he collects, just enough to get him to the next town. He has no true direction, every day much like the last. So, when his path crosses that of a young white girl who s been kidnapped by natives, he s unsure how to proceed. His confusion mounts when he s charged with returning her to her family, a journey through violent, treacherous territory that will test them both while leading them to their true purpose. ....
