PORTSMOUTH Being surrounded by books and libraries throughout her life is a luxury Portsmouth High School junior Eve Hurley said she has taken for granted.
So when a schoolmate joined her Peer Leadership group this year and suggested a book collection and fundraiser to help build a library for a community in need, Hurley and other club members jumped at the chance.
Since the winter, PHS’ Peer Leadership club has collected over 1,000 books to build a library in Malawi as part of the African Library Project, a grassroots group dedicated to building libraries throughout Africa. During the pandemic, I thought it was an amazing opportunity to show that we re still interested in sharing our resources and helping people who haven t always grown up wit the plethora of resources that we ve had, Hurley said.
