It wasn't until July 4, 1825, that ground was broken for the Ohio-Erie Canal in Newark to move goods more efficiently across Ohio. Amazing as it seems these canals were hand-dug with shovels and wheelbarrows and sometimes mules pulling drag lines. The fire happened shortly after 5am and involved five tonnes of grain at the Feed Mill in Tram Inn, near Allensmore. Four fire crews, a water carrier and fire officer were sent to battle the blaze in a store measuring 50 metres by 50 metres. They used breathing apparatus to deal with the blaze.
