During local meetings or press conferences with the governor, the vaccination clinic at the Fick Conference Center in Fredericksburg has been called as efficient as a Chick-Fil-A drive-thru. One reason for its success may be the nurse who volunteered to help in the early going, then quickly became its manager. Thatâs Brandy Stepaniak, and sheâs well-versed in nursing informatics, a field that combines the clinical side of treating patients with the information technology aspect of computer science. The skill set means Stepaniak can vaccinate people who come to the clinic on the campus of Mary Washington Hospital or help co-workers with a computer glitch. She regularly does bothâand more, said Jill Wolf, a fellow nurse who wanted to see Stepaniakâs efforts recognized. ....
Karen Duckett was glad her husband, Timothy, was vaccinated in March because he has pre-existing health conditionsâincluding three bouts with cancerâand has continued his work in auto sales throughout the pandemic. She thought it would be a different story for herself. Sheâs 56, works from her Stafford County home and âwanted everyone else who needed the vaccine more than I did to be able to go first.â Duckett had registered through the state health department, then was surprised when a relative mentioned last week that Mary Washington Healthcare has vaccines available. Duckett registered on the MWHC site and, within the hour, scheduled an appointment for the next day. ....
On Tuesday, it started offering the shots to its hospitalized patients. Several factors led to the decision, especially having access to the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, said Dr. Christopher Newman, chief medical officer of the system that includes Mary Washington Hospital and Stafford Hospital. The move also is part of the health care systemâs goal to protect people most vulnerable to the virus and âthose in a hospital for any reason are at higher risk,â Newman said. Vaccines will be given to patients before they go home. Those age 18 and over who have been admitted to the hospital are eligible, not people whoâve had outpatient procedures or come through the emergency room. Thereâs not enough of the one-dose vaccine available at this point, said Newman, who estimated about 20 patients a day would be vaccinated. ....
Hereâs an unusual question about vaccine registration: How does a person get off the state list? Thomas Balch of Fredericksburg and two family members, all over age 65, signed up through the Rappahannock Area Health District website in January, then successfully got appointments through Mary Washington Healthcare during the brief period it scheduled them through its website. While MWHC workers and volunteers continue to vaccinate people at the Fick Conference Center, the health care system isnât creating a separate list anymore. All names come from the local health district. Balch is concerned that he and his family membersâand others who did the same dual enrollmentâmight be âcluttering up the waiting list.â He wondered if he could remove their names so they donât delay others from getting appointments or cause an âadministrative burdenâ for workers. ....
