Philippines to import more rice next year
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines is projected to import more rice next year to meet the rising demand for the commodity, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
In its latest monthly global grain report, the USDA said the Philippines is expected to import a total of 2.1 million metric tons (MT) of rice in 2022.
This is higher than this year’s import forecast of two million MT.
“With a smaller crop, the country is forecast to import more to satisfy rising demand,” the USDA said.

Philippines vulnerable to rising US yields – S&P
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines is vulnerable to the impact of rising US yields on financial conditions and growth outlook, but not as much as during the “taper tantrum” episode in 2013, S&P Global Ratings said.
In its latest report titled “Asia’s emerging economies better cushioned against Taper Tantrum than in 2013,” S&P chief economist for Asia Pacific Shaun Roache said the Philippines and India are the most vulnerable due to accelerating inflation.
“Both economies have seen inflation rise in recent months. Real policy rates are below long-run average levels, eroding the return buffers,” the debt watcher said.

Philippines fails to improve ranking on equal opportunities for women
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines has failed to improve in giving women equal economic opportunities, with the pandemic reinforcing gender inequalities among countries, according to the World Bank.
In its latest report “Women, Business and the Law 2021,” the World Bank said the Philippines scored 78.8 out of 100 on the WBL 2021 index, which  analyzes laws and regulations affecting women’s economic opportunity in 190 economies across eight indicators – mobility, workplace, pay, marriage, parenthood, entrepreneurship, assets and pension.

Philippines welcomes US rejoining Paris accord on climate change
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines welcomes the announcement by United States President Joe Biden that the US is rejoining the Paris Agreement on climate change, according to Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez.
“This is a welcome development that comes on the heels of President Duterte’s repeated call on all nations to act on the climate crisis with urgency as one united community under the Paris Agreement,” Dominguez said in a statement over the weekend.
“Now, more than ever, we need to ensure the mobilization of finance flows towards the adaptation needs of our most vulnerable communities. We need such action to be faster and on a greater scale. And we need it to bring about effective solutions on the ground across the globe,” he said.

Philippines assured of slot in FIDE World Cup ’21
MANILA, Philippines — At least one Filipino will get to play in the FIDE World Cup 2021 set late this year in Minsk, Belarus.
This after the Philippines received one of the 100 seats allotted by FIDE, which recently increased the number of participants from 128 to 206. The biennial event awards a couple of berths in the Candidates Tournament, an eight-player double round-robin event to decide the challenger for the World Championship.
“The top 100 countries all over the world were given wild card seats and we will give that one spot to our national champion this year,” said National Chess Federation of the Philippines executive director Cliburn Orbe.

Philippines welcomes 234 repatriated OFWs
MANILA, Philippines — A total of 234 Filipinos in the Middle East were brought back to the country on New Year’s Day through a government repatriation mission from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Among those who arrived aboard the government-chartered Philippine Airlines (PAL) flight were three abandoned minors, several detainees who had been imprisoned in Dubai and wards and their minor children from the shelters of the Philippine embassy in Abu Dhabi and consulate general in Dubai.
It was the 60th chartered flight arranged by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), as part of the administration’s “Kalinga at Malasakit for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs),” since the pandemic broke out.
