Romania introduces laws overseeing food supplement standards
Writing in the Official Gazette of Romania, the country’s parliament authorised
Law 56/2021 on food supplements (FS Law), in drawn out parliamentary procedures stretching back to 2012.
Central to the legislation are provisions that require prior certification to be granted before food supplements can be placed on the market and only then in pre-packaged form.
Products can only be labelled as ‘food supplements’ with no other designation permitted and with its packaging, advertising and promotional materials complying with specific legal conditions.
Additional provisions include the publishing of certified food supplements on the website of the relevant authority, together with prospectus and label and updated on a monthly basis.

We start with DSM Nutritional Products (DNP) and the news that the firm’s President & CEO is to retire.
Effective from 1 April 2021, Goppelsroeder ends his stint at DSM having joined in 2003 when DSM acquired Roche Holding AG’s vitamins division. Dimitri de Vreeze, DSM’s Co-CEO will make the leap into the DNP leadership role in his capacity as COO.

Lonza's softgel interests wane with sale of European sites

Lonza is to sell off two European sites to NextPharma in a deal that gives the contract development and manufacturing firm facilities to work with lipid oral dosage forms for the nutrition and pharma markets.
The production sites in Ploermel in France and Edinburgh in the UK, employs around 260 and 130 permanent staff respectively and produces liquid-filled hard capsules (including Licaps) and softgels (including for high potent and hormonal products).
“NextPharma is an established and well-respected company, with extensive experience in oral and topical finished dosage forms,” comments Gordon Bates, President and Head of Small Molecules at Lonza.
As such, it is the ideal buyer given the technologies available at the Ploermel and Edinburgh sites.
