CANAAN — Two ice skaters who fell through thin ice Wednesday morning on Canaan Street Lake were rescued after more than 25 minutes in the frigid water, according to the Canaan fire chief.
The two women, both Canaan residents, were more than 150 yards off-shore and were fortunate that Canaan police officer Matthew Bunten had just arrived at the lake to check the lock on the Canaan Street beach house and also make sure no one was venturing onto unstable ice, Fire Chief Bill Bellion said.
“These people were incredibly lucky,” Bellion said. “He saw two people probably 150 to 200 yards offshore. He looked away, looked back, and they were gone, and he knew that they were in the water.”
