Folks and i think one of the things we haven t addressed are some of the heroic actions of the boat crews the other night. because 115 people were brought home yesterday basically based on the efforts of the other boats that were out there. coast guard got to help with medevacs but 115 people were picked by fellow offshore boats as well and that s a pretty heroic act as well. what s your prepareness for this type of issue? because as you said we haven t seen this combination of things. i m sure you ve been called to deal with things and accidents near rigs, but this is unusual. you re firefighting and looking to rescue people. what s the preparedness of the coast guard on this front? kinds of goes to the multimission, multiagency, maritime, we kind of do it all. and what s unique for us on this each element has its own expertise as well. we have search-and-rescue capabilities and the people doing that are focusing specifically on that. like i mentioned, the national strike norse ha ....

Guys are trained on evacuating the rigs and they got onto work boats and the coast guard was able to rescue those folks without anybody in the water. shepard: do we know how this went down? not sure yet. the coast guard is working with the mineral management service and platform others and other partners to find out how this happened. shepard: you know, jonathan hunt was reporting there s a concern this rig would collapse. what would that do? these are it s they re dynamic positions rigs, so it s not tethered to the ocean floor. it floats. they use gps to stay over the drilling hole. so when it was listing, it s not pulling on chains or anything but it listed some. it did impede a little bit of firefighting but there s no concern it will tip over. they re pretty confident it will stay upright. ....

To get there. the crews go through daily firefighting and evacuation drills. in some cases more than once a day. all the manned rigs have alarm and fire detection systems. trained firefighters on hand when other crews are involved in what you call hot work, the kind of work that might cause a fire. the rigs have emergency shut down devices, reduredundanciere water deluge system, portable chemical extinguishers and life boats. many safety regular laces were put in place after major disasters. some of the deadliest include the piper alpha disaster that killed 167 people in the north sea in 1988. 123 people died in an accident off of norway in 1989. and then in 1982, off of newfoundland, 84 people were killed when a rig sank. we re going to have more on that later in the show. it s one of the most important decisions any president can make. president obama is in the process of making it. what is he looking for in the next supreme court justice? ....

Bill: we ve got that going for us. martha: indeed. wind was a major problem for the firefighters in hampton, new hampshire when a fire broke out on an old ocean front hotel. this is the aftermath. look at these pictures. an entire city block burned down when hurricane-force winds fanned the flames and spread embers from that hotel to other buildings. the hotel was not occupied at the time thankfully and fire crews were able to get others out of the buildings, so great work by the firefighters in hampton, new hampshire, but they were dealing with a lot of wind that made the firefighting very difficult. bill: great work as you say and well done. in a moment here, back to the health care summit, what did the highly anticipated canfab accomplish? confab accomplish? i ll ask about that next. martha: perhaps the best-known entertainer in vegas, and the police show up at his home. what is going on at wayne ....
