Attendance continues to slide at the Six Flags theme parks, with a five percent drop in the first three months of this year, compared to the same period in 2022. But increased spending by those who are visiting helped push the company to record first quarter revenue, Six Flags reported today.
Six Flags' attendance and revenue slide continued in the fourth quarter of 2022, as the company posted a 26% percent drop in attendance last year over 2021.
Theme park attendance fell 33% in the three months ending October 2 at Six Flags versus the same period one year earlier, the company reported today. The attendance drop contributed to a 21% decline in revenue for the quarter, from $638 million in 2021 to $505 million in 2022.
The Six Flags theme parks reported that its income dropped 36% in the second quarter of 2022, driven by a 22% decline in attendance during the three month period ending July 3, compared with the same period one year earlier.

Today, the theme park chain announced that its Chicago-area park - Six Flags Great America - is donating 50,000 one-day tickets to the State of Illinois in support of Covid vaccination efforts. "Six Flags is honored to partner with state leaders to encourage Illinois residents to get vaccinated, especially in underserved communities," Six Flags President and CEO Mike Spanos said. "We appreciate Governor Pritzker’s leadership on this initiative and we look forward to moving to Phase 5 very soon."

For the full year of 2020, Six Flags reported $357 million in revenue on a total attendance of 6.8 million guests, with a net loss of $423 million and an adjusted EBITDA loss of $231 million. That compares to attendance of 32.8 million visitors, $1.488 billion in revenue and a profit of $179 million in 2019. On the flip side, Six Flags reported an increase in per capita guest spending in 2020, rising 14 percent from $42.37 to $48.45. That reflected an increase in both admission and in-park spending per capita.
