Ngāti Te Ata top chef inspires other young Māori to rise

Lyall Minhinnick is one of three of New Zealand's best young chefs who battled it out in the kitchen for the chance to be crowned Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s first young ambassador chef.
Minhinnick of Ngāti Te Ata entered to inspire Māori and Pasifika youth to dream big, push through barriers, and see past their circumstances.
The finalists were shortlisted to the top three out of 19. Despite not winning first place, Minhinncik says getting the chance to put his food on the plate and show it to the judges was “absolutely awesome”.

Chef's passion recognised

To Lyall Minhinnick, good cooking is all about gathering ingredients, learning their history, bringing them back to the kitchen, and putting the whole package together on a plate.
Mr Minhinnick, who has been working as a chef at Fleurs Place for two and a-half years, has been named a Beef + Lamb New Zealand young ambassador chef.
A chance encounter with Fleur Sullivan at her Moeraki restaurant, while dining there with his aunty, uncle and partner, resulted in a job for Mr Minhinnick.

How to enjoy a sweet weekend in Oamaru

Big is good in Oamaru, from vast skies and enormous limestone valleys chiselled by flat grey rivers, to views so surreal they look as though they’ve been painted. The B-side to this gobsmacking scenery is a chocolate-box town that’s big on charm and character. Here’s how to do a weekend in Oamaru.
FRIDAY
2.00pm Nothing quickens the pulse quite like a jet boat experience. Head to Glenavy where Braided River Jet Boating will whisk you to the Waitaki Dam and then downstream to dart in and out of the Waitaki River’s lower braided channels. If you’re lucky, you might spot some rare and endangered river-nesting birds such as the black-fronted tern or the wrybill plover.
