The McConnell Air Force Base 2022 Frontiers In Flight Open House & Air Show, held in Wichita Sept. 24-25, was the first time in four years the Wichita facility has held the event. The show scheduled for 2020 was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. McConnell Air Force Base, opened in 1951, serves as the nation’s first KC-46A Pegasus operational base, the newest aerial refueling platform. It also operates the KC-135 Stratotanker aerial refuelers. The aircraft also doubles as an airlift and aeromedical evacuation carrier.
The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds air demonstration squadron was the headline performance in McConnell Air Force Base’s Frontiers in Flight Open House & Airshow in Wichita Sept. 24-25. As a team flying Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcons, members perform high aerial maneuvers, demonstrating high-performance aircraft around the world. The demonstration is a mix of formation flying and solo routines.
