Australia’s largest cabinet Micro-CT scanner, unveiled at Flinders University Tonsley campus, will enable South Australian researchers to scan large human bones, ancient fossils, and machine parts with unprecedented levels of detail and reveal fresh insights about the makeup of 3D objects.
The state-of-the-art piece of equipment enables 3D-scanning of large and heavy samples weighing up to 50kg, including human limbs, prosthesis devices, engineered structures, batteries, plants, fossils, vertebrates, and 3D composite materials.
Developed by Nikon Metrology (UK), the 4.5 tonne scanner will also enable custom-developed experimental systems to be placed inside, to test human limbs, biomedical devices, and engineered components. ....

Women and girls, who are often themselves victims of human trafficking and are sexually exploited by criminal gangs, are being prosecuted and convicted for human trafficking-related crimes, according to a new UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) report.
The over-representation of women and girls as both victims and perpetrators has been a consistent theme to emerge from the UNODC’s Global Trafficking in Persons Reports, says Flinders University criminology PhD candidate Alexandra Baxter who contributed an Australian case study to the latest report.
“From my research into Australia cases, I identified a significant theme during the sentencing of these women which was the victim-offender ‘should have known’ better because she was a victim,” says Ms Baxter, who is also working on the ‘Slavery and slavery-like practices in South Australia’ project. ....

Our reluctance to think, talk or communicate about death is even more pronounced when we deal with others’ loss compared to our own, new research finds, but either way we tend to frame attitudes and emotions in a sad and negative way.
Teaching new more positive ways to address these difficult conversations is the focus of a new paper in PLOS ONE journal by palliative care specialists across Australia.
Led by Flinders University’s Research Centre for Palliative Care, Death and Dying (RePaDD) and Palliative and Supportive Services, researchers from Flinders, CQUniversity Australia, NT Palliative Care Central Australia and University of Technology Sydney, surveyed 1,491 people about the use of language to express their feelings and insights into death and dying. ....

A teenager was arrested and police are looking for a second suspect after a grass fire at Flinders University overnight.
Police and fire crews responded to reports of a grass fire in the grounds of Flinders University, Sturt Road, Bedford Park about 12.30am on Monday 11 January.
About 10 square metres of grass was burnt before the fire was extinguished by MFS.
Security spotted two males leaving the area and provided a description of the suspects to police.
Patrols searched the area with the assistance of Police Dog Zac, who located a set of house keys on the oval. Police attended the nearby house and apprehended a 17-year-old suspect. ....
