Sydney will be locked down for an extra four weeks

Crippled businesses and stood-down staff will get extra payments to get them through the additional four weeks of Sydney lockdown announced by the New South Wales government on Wednesday.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirmed the lockdown had been extended to August 28, with authorities making no headway in reducing case numbers as the Delta strain of Covid-19 stubbornly circulates around south-west and western Sydney.
A further 177 cases of the virus were recorded on Wednesday, of which 46 were out in the community while infectious.
Health officials found 90 infections in south-west Sydney and 46 cases in the city's west in the 24 hours to 8pm on Tuesday.

NSW has reported 177 new local COVID-19 cases, a record daily case total for Sydney’s outbreak, and another person has died, the 11th death during the outbreak.
NSW Health confirmed a woman in her 90s died at Liverpool Hospital on Tuesday. NSW Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant said it was not related to the cluster at Liverpool Hospital. The woman was not vaccinated and tested positive on July 24.

“It was fairly obvious, given the way the numbers were going in the last few days, it would have not been possible for us to get out of lockdown tomorrow or Friday,” the Premier said on Wednesday.

Covid-19 Australia: NSW records 177 cases and another death as Sydney lockdown extended

New restrictions in place for the next four weeks include limiting shopping to a 10-kilometre radius from a person’s place of residence if the item is available locally.
Non-essential workers in the local government areas of Parramatta, Campbelltown and Georges River will not be allowed to leave their areas for work from midnight on Wednesday, bringing the number of western and southern Sydney councils under that restriction to eight.
The source of infection of 103 of the cases is under investigation. At least 68 cases were in the community while infectious, including 46 who were infectious in the community for all of their infectious period.
