Some states like Washington are turning down funds the Biden administration has made available to remove millions of dangerous lead pipes nationwide.
Many American cities have been excavating water mains, revealing lead pipes and leaving them there. The work’s disruption of the pipe can also spike lead levels, an investigation by The Associated Press has found.
Even some cities that are committed to taking out lead pipe say they have too few resources and local rules can get in the way.
Recently, more money and attention to the danger of lead pipes has prompted some to stop the practice. Still, it remains legal.
