The world held its breath as Judge Peter Cahill read the guilty verdicts in the Derek Chauvin case, 11 months after Chauvin kneeled on George Floyd’s neck for 9 minutes and 26 seconds, subsequently killing the father of five.
Cheers echoed outside George Floyd Square in Minneapolis, Minnesota – a city and state that has spent the past five years reeling from police brutality against Black people – after the verdicts were handed down.
Black Americans have been waiting a while for what should feel like a taste of justice, but many have said the conviction hardly moves the needle and reinforces why police reform is needed.

Savannah native Wanda Lloyd wants Black history to be recognized every day

Wanda S. Lloyd / For Savannah Morning News
In her children’s book “Carter Reads the Newspaper,” author Deborah Hopkinson described the life of scholar and historian Carter G. Woodson, the second African American to graduate from Harvard University (W.E.B. DuBois was the first).
The author wrote: “At Harvard, so the story goes, one of Carter’s professors said Black people had no history. … Carter spoke up. ‘No people lacked history,’ he said. The professor challenged him to prove him wrong.”
I’ve been challenged over the years about why we celebrate Black History Month. I grew up in a time and in a family that always encouraged pride in reading about the accomplishments of Black people in the United States. I have long held that we must also share Black history with people who are not African American, something I’ve done in my adult years. While the traditional month of celebration is important, we should recognize Black history every day.

LeAndrea Mikell, I arrive to find Past President
Cynthia Cradduck outside with her 1-year-old son
Emerson.
As we walk inside the neighborhood gastropub, I tell Cynthia that I am a longtime fan of this international program for young professionals that develops leadership skills through relationships and service to others. I always look to see who the new members are and who has moved up in their leadership roles.
Guess who is the new president? My favorite Calvary Day School dude
Gordon Hunter! Looking dapper in a black suit and yellow-striped tie, Hunter tells me, “I am excited to share our 2021 chapter plans with our members on Feb. 2 and invited two new guys tonight.”

John Waltz created 'Little Gracie' sculpture at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah

Leslie Alwiel / For Savannah Morning News
Sculptor John Walz is probably best known in Savannah for his “Little Gracie” statue created in 1890, memorializing Gracie Watson in Bonaventure Cemetery.  He has over 70 sculptures in Bonaventure Cemetery and others in local cemeteries, as well as in Savannah.
His own marker is another story in itself.
Walz was born in Germany in 1844. He came to the United States as a young boy, originally to live with family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, after the death of his parents. He returned to Europe to study his craft and eventually settled in Savannah in 1890.
He married a local widow, Sarah Bell Gilmore, in 1907 when he was 63.  When Walz died Nov. 27, 1922, he was buried two days later in Bonaventure Cemetery in a plot originally purchased by Charles Gilmore, Waltz’s wife’s first husband.  His wife died in 1931 and was interred between her two husbands.  Walz however didn’t receive a marker until April 30, 2015, when the Bonaventure Historical Society (BHS) paid to have a marker installed.
