George Winterling was already a beloved member of the community and a legend among television meteorologists when I came to the station two decades later.
For 50 years on WJXT, forecasting temperatures, rainfall and storms was the biggest role of this legendary meteorologist who “lived and breathed” weather. George Winterling was also known, both to his television fans and to his neighbors in Beauclerc, for his love of gardening.
Not many people can say they’ve impacted generations of people living in and around Jacksonville, but George Winterling could.
George Winterling served as WJXT 4's first chief meteorologist and held the position for 47 years before retiring in 2009. He passed away on Wednesday at the age of 91.
