Letters: The Bank of England is in denial over its role in the inflation crisis

SIR – Andrew Bailey, the Governor of the Bank of England, has said that the Monetary Policy Committee could not have anticipated the shocks he claims have caused such high rates of inflation (report, May 17).

The history of St Neots High Street

The town grew and expanded around the medieval St Neots Priory, which was rebuilt over many centuries and then finally forced to closed under Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries in 1539.
Weekly markets have been held on the Market Square since 1130 when a market charter was created. Markets continue to this day and a fortnightly Farmers' Market also runs on the second and fourth Saturday of each month, from 8am till 2pm.

Long-standing residents of the town will also remember the weekly cattle market, which was also held on Thursdays. The St Neots Livestock Market, in New Street, was one of the largest in East Anglia with more than 1,000 pigs, cattle and sheep sold by auction each week. The cattle auction closed in 1985 and there is now sheltered housing on the site.

Letters: A plan to make sure that all pupils catch up when schools reopen

When schools reopen, longer school days could help pupils who may have suffered setbacks in lockdown to catch up

SIR – As a schoolmaster of 34 years, I recognise the challenge that both educators and learners are facing over “lost schooling” (report, February 1) – but it is not an insurmountable one.
One enviable benefit of independent education is that many independent schools have much longer working days than state schools, and some also provide lessons on Saturdays.
Extending the school day to 5pm would mean, for some schools, the equivalent of two extra days of teaching a week. This would enable a rapid catch-up. Saturday school could be offered for those requiring more support, with additional funding provided to reward teachers’ work.

Harmful effects of failure to share NHS records
SIR – For some years I have attended the Royal Eye Infirmary at Dorset County Hospital to undertake regular monitoring tests for my glaucoma.
In March this year, the NHS very sensibly opened a standalone eye clinic in the town, in order to relieve some of the pressures on the eye infirmary at Dorset County Hospital.
On completion of my examination, eye scans and visual fields test, the results were immediately and carefully reviewed by the optometrist, who told me that, as this was my first appointment with the clinic, I should return in four months’ time for duplicate tests so that they might begin to establish a monitoring record.
