Arrow Films’ announcement of “Weird Wisconsin: The Bill Rebane Collection” I had neither heard of the man nor any of the six features contained therein. That’s not necessarily a red flag but after shredding my brain with a three-day Rebane-a-thon I came to understand why his films aren’t more widely discussed: they aren’t very good.
Now, I will say over the course of six films I did find some occasional charm from the low-budget aesthetics and regional acting – famous faces are scarce in Rebane country – but most of the pictures, for me, felt like they were produced with that age-old grindhouse mantra in mind: shoot it cheap and hope it hits big. Rebane is like Wisconsin’s H.G. Lewis, a fitting comparison considering Lewis stepped in to finish Rebane’s first feature, ....

WOYM: A Roanoke Valley railway tragedy may have led to a long musical career

Every now and then, unbearable tragedy builds a foundation for great triumph.
So it was from one such dreadful episode recounted here some months ago that ultimately a stage was set for a bright future to be fashioned by one of those most deeply impacted by the tragedy.
The story starts with the derailment of the Norfolk & Western southbound Extra 2012 freight train. Pulling 75 cars, only five of which were loaded, the train left the tracks the middle of a hot for the season afternoon May 20, 1934, just south of Nace in Botetourt County.
What prompted the accident âwas not definitely ascertained,â according to the railroadâs July 5 that year incident report to the Interstate Commerce Commission. ....

COVID-19 vaccinations for residents of Manitoba personal care homes almost finished

WINNIPEG
COVID-19 vaccinations for all residents of personal care homes who choose to receive one will be completed on Saturday, according to Health and Seniors Care Minister Heather Stefanson.
In a statement, Stefanson said this phase of the province’s immunization plan will be completed in three weeks, ahead of the previously committed 28-day timeline.
“I want to thank all the health-care providers on the front lines and the members of the Vaccine Implementation Task Force for making this possible, as well as for their hard work, detailed plans and commitment to protecting some of the most vulnerable Manitobans,” she said. ....
