hemant soren: Jharkhand CM writes to PM seeking free Covid vaccine for 18-44 age group

Synopsis
Terming the mandate for states to procure medicines against cooperative federalism, Soren said, "This is probably for the first instance in the history of independent India that the states have been mandated to procure vaccines on their own."
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday and sought free Covid jabs for the 18-44 age group, saying the state was unable to incur nearly Rs 1,100 crore on it due to stressed resources.
Soren said the state was battling a deadly second wave of COVID-19 with its limited resources.
"The financial burden on the state for vaccination of the age cohort of 18-44 years is likely to be more than Rs 1,100 crore considering 1.57 crore eligible beneficiaries. With vaccine being available for age cohort of 12-18 years and below, the mentioned financial burden will further increase by around Rs 1,000 crore. It will be extremely difficult to spare as much resources from the resource pool of the state which is already stressed during Covid times," the letter mentioned.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren: People In State Above 18-Years To Get Free COVID-19 Vaccine In State

The government is working day and night to help people amid a surge in COVID-19 cases.
Ranchi:
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Thursday night said that his government will provide COVID-19 vaccine to people above 18 years of age for free.
Mr Soren's statement came after the centre announced a "liberalised" policy making all adults above 18 years of age eligible to get inoculated from May 1 and allowing state governments and private hospitals to purchase vaccines from manufacturers.
Opposition parties alleged that the policy implies that the central government has abdicated its responsibility to provide free vaccines to citizens between the age group of 18 and 45 years.

Covax has said it hopes to deliver more than 2 billion Covid doses across the world this year.
Pfizer and BioNTech have agreed to supply their Covid-19 vaccine to the World Health Organization co-led Covax vaccine access scheme, two sources familiar with the deal said, the latest in a series of shots to be included in the project aimed at lower-income countries.
The deal is expected to be announced on Friday, according to the sources, who declined to be named due to the confidentiality of the agreement.
Details on the size of the deal or the price per dose Covax would pay were not immediately clear, but the sources said the allotment would likely be relatively small. One source said the reason for the limited volume was that the doses were primarily meant for healthcare workers in the countries that Covax serves.
