Increased government intolerance of independent reporting pushed the number of imprisoned journalists worldwide to a record high of 293 this year, more than a quarter of them in China alone, a monitoring group said in an annual survey released.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) Thursday denounced that the number of journalists jailed for their reporting work has reached a historic Zenit in 2021, with 293 of them imprisoned worldwide, 50 of whom were in China.
Data compiled by the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, which has documented press freedom violations in the United States since 2017, shows that the police abuse of journalists covering protests has become a deeply entrenched problem.
