Place North West | Manchester science museum unveils £5m exhibition space

Dan Whelan
The 8,000 sq ft gallery is located on the lower ground floor of the Science and Industry Museum’s grade two-listed New Warehouse.
Funded largely by a £3.8m grant from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the £5m project is the first element of long-term strategy by the museum – known as Mosi – to restore its historic estate.
Designed by architectural practice Carmody Groarke, work to create the Special Exhibitions Gallery was carried out by contractor HH Smith & Sons.
Mosi director Sally MacDonald said: “This year has brought home to all of us how fundamentally science shapes our lives. As we all rebuild personally, socially and culturally, and look forward to better things in 2021, we can’t wait to share this new exhibition space.”

V&A Dundee – club culture exhibition
V&A Dundee’s Night Fever exhibition will be one of the first shows to open in the UK, with Scotland coming out of lockdown earlier than the rest on 1 May. Appropriate too, that it will explore a world that most of us haven’t seen for more than a year: clubbing. Night Fever will delve into iconic clubs from New York, Paris, Florence, Manchester, London, Bierut and Berlin – as well as those in towns and cities across Scotland. The show will cover how the progressive and subversive history of nightclub design has influenced pop culture, from Studio 54 to the Haçienda.

The first photographs of Carmody Groarke’s temporary exhibitions gallery for Manchester’s Science and Industry Museum have been released
Carmody Groarke won the go-ahead for the new £5 million temporary exhibitions gallery in 2016 after landing the job in November 2015, having beaten HAT Projects, Reiach and Hall, John McAslan & Partners, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and Adam Richards.
