We set that up in advance. when it is time for that observation to happen we move the configured focal plane into the field of view of the telescope, we move the telescope to the position and the light from each one of those stars goes down a fibre, they all line up at the entrance to the main part of the instrument which is a spectrometer, splits the light into all of its different colours and within those colours you can see information about the chemistry. so you find out about the chemistry. so you find out about the chemistry of the stars, the distribution of elements, and that contains the fingerprint of the elements, the distribution of elements, the distribution of elements within where they formed. so the little host galaxy that they formed in as that galaxy fell into the milk away carries this chemical fingerprint and this is what we try to disentangle. we have mapped that out across stars that are not completely spread out across the galactic disk, we cannot disentangle them ....

Analyzing gamma-ray sources leads to an upper limit on how many antimatter stars could exist in the Milky Way.

Nowadays it is taken for granted that the Universe contains no substantial amounts of antimatter. Most cosmological models include hypothetical physical processes to explain why matter dominates although the Universe should have been created with equal amounts of both. But in 2018, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer 2 (AMS-02) experiment on the International Space Station possibly detected several antihelium nuclei, suggesting that some original antimatter survived to form antistars and even antigalaxies. Now, Simon Dupourqué and colleagues at the Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planétologie (IRAP), France, identify possible antistars based on ten years of gamma-ray observations from the orbiting Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and derive c ....
