Wyoming Stargazing Speaker Series To Feature NASA Astrophysicist

The non-profit organization Wyoming Stargazing has been hosting The World Above the Tetons speaker series virtually this spring and will conclude in June with Dr. Michela Negro.
Negro is a researcher at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center where she studies multi-messenger astrophysics. That means she looks not only at visible light but also at other kinds of particles and waves that are produced in space.
All of them are telling us the same story, basically, the story of our universe, said Negro. The point is to merge all of the information that we can gather from these different messengers and have a wider and more complete picture of the universe. ....

Physics - Counting All the Antistars in the Sky

Counting All the Antistars in the Sky

Analyzing gamma-ray sources leads to an upper limit on how many antimatter stars could exist in the Milky Way.
S. Dupourqué/IRAP
×
Nowadays it is taken for granted that the Universe contains no substantial amounts of antimatter. Most cosmological models include hypothetical physical processes to explain why matter dominates although the Universe should have been created with equal amounts of both. But in 2018, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer 2 (AMS-02) experiment on the International Space Station possibly detected several antihelium nuclei, suggesting that some original antimatter survived to form antistars and even antigalaxies. Now, Simon Dupourqué and colleagues at the Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planétologie (IRAP), France, identify possible antistars based on ten years of gamma-ray observations from the orbiting Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and derive c ....

NASA researcher headlines Wyoming Stargazing series

As a young girl growing up in small-town Vermont, Aki Roberge dreamed of other worlds.
An avid science fiction fan, she wondered if the kinds of planets she saw in the “Star Wars” movies, with their varied climates and cultures, creatures and civilizations, might really exist.
Today, and for more than a decade now, she actually explores such possibilities, searching not for parched Tatooine or ice-clad Hoth, but for real exoplanets — planets orbiting other stars.
Dr. Aki Roberge, a research scientist in NASA’s Exoplanet and Stellar Astrophysics Lab at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, right outside Washington, D.C., will talk about her life, her work and the latest breakthroughs in this relatively new branch of astronomy at 7 p.m. Friday. It’s part of Wyoming Stargazing’s “The World Above the Tetons” speaker series. ....
