Galesburg City Council on Monday night will discuss installing street lights between West Lake Storey Road and U.S. 150 along where the new multi-use path will go. Attendees of a public information meeting made the suggestion. Staff examined lighting in this area and found gaps of 1,000 to 2,000 feet that didn't have adequate lighting. The city has an ordinance that requires no more than a 400-foot gap for streetlights. Adding the streetlights to existing poles only requires the city to pay the light's electrical costs. Council documents call this a cost-effective way to make the roadway and the future path safer for users. Lake Storey Road is technically Knox County jurisdiction, but the future path will be under the city's purview. 17 LED lights will be installed on poles in the area. Results of a community survey covering a range of city topics are in, and Aldermen will get a look at them at a work session Monday night. The survey, which was conducted in the late summer, had the aim of analyzing the satisfaction and priority ratings for different city projects. It asked questions about city services, quality of life, public safety, and parks and recreation. Citizens were also asked about a future Galesburg Community Center, including how much taxpayers would be comfortable with its costs. Part of the goal was also to quantify current viewpoints to measure against later. There were parts of the City's Strategic Plan that were largely subjective, things like, "More citizens feel that Galesburg is a safe community." ETC was the company that administered the survey and they will present the aggregate results to Aldermen tonight.
