When textbooks mislead: Incorrect history taught in Grade 10 curriculum

KATHMANDU, Feb 27: If your children are studying in Grade 10, then you should be aware that their curriculum is teaching them incorrect history. The contextual lesson on page 243 of the Nepali subject textbook for Grade 10 contains content from a letter supposedly written by the former President of America, Abraham Lincoln, to the principal of his son’s school, titled ‘What will my son have to learn’. Despite Lincoln never having written such a letter, the new curriculum includes this flawed content in the textbook.

काठमाडौँ, असार १९ गते । कक्षा १२ मा नयाँ भर्ना हुने विद्यार्थीले पठनपाठन सुरु भए लगत्तै पाठ्यपुस्तक पाउन कठिन हुने देखिएको छ । साउनबाट कक्षा १२ को नयाँ पठनपाठन सुरु गरिने तय भए पनि अहिलेसम्म पाठ्यपुस्तक छाप्ने सुरुवात नै नहुँदा विद्यार्थीले निःशुल्क पाठ्यपुस्तक पाउन कठिन हुने देखिएको हो ।
कक्षा १२ को तीनवटा विषयको पाठ्यपुस्तक सरकारले छाप्ने छ तर पाठ्यपुस्तक लेखन कार्य पूरा गरेर प्रकाशनका लागि अन्तिम स्वीकृति दिइएको छैन । पाठ्यक्रम विकास केन्द्रका निर्देशक तथा सूचना अधिकारी गणेशप्रसाद भट्टराईले असार २५ गतेसम्म पाठ्यपुस्तक लेखन कार्य पूरा गरी प्रकाशनका लागि जनक शिक्षा सामग्री केन्द्रमा पठाउने गरी तयारी भइरहेको जानकारी दिनुभयो ।
यसपटक सरकारले तीनवटा अनिवार्य विषय अङ्ग्रेजी, नेपाली र सामाजिक तथा जीवनोपयोगी शिक्षाका पुस्तक प्रकाशन गर्नेछ । गणित विषयको पुस्तक लेखन कार्य जारी रहेकाले केही समय लाग्ने जानकारी केन्द्रका अधिकारीहरूले दिएका छन् । उहाँले आफूहरूको तयारीअनुसार ढिलोमा पनि आगामी साउन १५ गतेसम्ममा विद्यार्थीको हातमा पाठ्यपुस्तक पु¥याउने योजना रहेको बताउनुभयो ।
राष्ट्रिय परीक्षा बोर्डले साउनबाट कक्षा १२ को पठनपाठन सञ्चालन गर्न सकिने जनाएको छ । असारभित्र कक्षा ११ को आन्तरिक मूल्याङ्कनको कार्य पूरा गरी साउन १ गतेबाट कक्षा १२ को नयाँ पठनपाठन सुरु गर्न सकिने जनाइएको हो । जनक शिक्षाले पाविकेन्द्रबाट अनुमति पाएपछिको तीन साताको हाराहारीमा पुस्तक छपाइ कार्य पूरा गरी विद्यार्थीको हातमा पु¥याउन सकिने जनाएको छ । केन्द्रका प्रबन्धक सञ्चालक अनिलकुमार झाले अनुमति प्राप्त गर्न बाँकी रहेकाले कक्षा १२ को पुस्तक छपाइ सुरु हुन नसकेको जानकारी दिनुभयो ।
सरकारले यसपटकबाट कक्षा १२ सम्म अध्ययन गर्ने छात्रछात्रालाई निःशुल्क पाठ्यपुस्तक उपलब्ध गराउने घोषणा गरेको छ । आर्थिक वर्ष ०७८÷७९ को बजेटमा सरकारले कक्षा १२ सम्म अध्ययन गर्ने छात्रछात्रालाई निःशुल्क पाठ्यपुस्तक उपलब्ध गराउने घोषणा गरेको थियो । यसअघि कक्षा १० सम्ममात्र निःशुल्क पाठ्यपुस्तक दिने सरकारी नीति थियो । घोषणापछि कक्षा ११ र १२ मा सामुदायिक विद्यालयमा अध्ययन गर्ने विद्यार्थीले निःशुल्क पाठ्यपुस्तक प्राप्त गर्नेछन् । विद्यार्थीलाई छवटै विषयको पुस्तक निःशुल्क दिने जनाइएको छ । त्यसका लागि आवश्यक रकम स्थानीय तहमा पठाइसकिएको शिक्षा तथा मानव स्रोत विकास केन्द्रले जनाएको छ ।
