Lewes Public Library’s young environmentalist club, Roots & Shoots, now has a plot at the Lewes Community Garden.
Participating teenagers will get firsthand training and experience working with some of the community’s best master gardeners, learning how to develop and maintain a successful organic produce garden.
One of the Lewes Community Garden’s main objectives is to harvest organic crops to donate to local food banks and pantries in the Lewes/Rehoboth area.
Teen Services Librarian Emily Ellinger said, “When I learned of what the Lewes Community Garden was doing, I knew Roots & Shoots had to get involved.”

Ag safety conference to go virtual March 17

March 15, 2021
The Delaware Farm Bureau will hold its fourth annual Ag Safety Conference virtually from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 17.
After canceling last year’s event due to the pandemic, Ag Safety Conference Chair June Unruh said the P&E Committee is excited to bring the conference back to benefit farmers and consumers in the First State.
"I don't know of anyone else having these kinds of safety conferences. I think it’s very crucial that we keep up with this. We have to look after each other," said Unruh.
Traditionally, the conference has included giveaways for participants and doubled as a chance for attendees to learn about safe practices around the farm and network with others. Unruh said the opportunity to gather and enjoy each other's company was a highlight many missed last year.

Mirepoix Garden planted for singular mix of herbs and vegetables

Go-to combo added into many soups, stews and sauces

One of the best things about gardening is recognizing how many things in our lives are the result of immigrants – immigrant plants as well as people. Some everyday words are named after people or places. For example, our word “algebra” comes from the Arabic word al-jabr, and “algorithm” is in fact named after Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi, whose last name was horribly translated into Greek and mispronounced. In 1501, Aldus Manutius, a printer, developed a type style that was thin and slanted. Since he was Italian, that style is today called italic.

Grow an earlier and more abundant tomato harvest

Be the first in your neighborhood to enjoy a garden-ripe tomato, then continue harvesting an abundance of flavorful tomatoes throughout the growing season. A little planning and strategic planting can help you get an earlier and bigger tomato harvest.
Jump-start the season by warming the soil. Cover the planting space with a floating row cover, clear plastic or a cloche. Once the soil is warm, you are ready to plant your tomatoes. Use the row cover or cloche to protect your plants when cold temperatures or frost are in the forecast. You will get a two- to four-week head start to the season.

Kajari melons grow best in hot, sunny areas

Paul Barbano
Plant Kajari melons directly into the garden after all danger of frost has passed.
There is something inherently fun about melons, which is why they are a great crop for kids. One of the most colorful melons is the striped Kajari melon (Cucumis melo Kajari) from India. These round, two-pound melons look as though they were colored by kindergartners, highlighted with bright red-orange, light green and dark green stripes.
The best part of any melon is the taste, and these remarkable gems will not disappoint even the pickiest eater. The fragrant, pale-green flesh is very sweet, with a slightly musky taste.
