OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The current surge in virus cases in Nebraska continues to send more people to the hospital and put stress on the state's health care system. Health officials said Thursday that they are already concerned about hospital capacity and the spread of the new omicron variant of the virus could make the situation worse if it proves to be more contagious.
Following a dip in COVID-19 hospitalizations this summer and a plateau throughout the fall, hospitalizations have reached a yearly high in Nebraska.
COVID-19 patients are occupying nearly 15% of the state's hospital beds, a level that in the past triggered more restrictions.
Nebraska health care workers will care for all comers, one doctor said, "But it's getting old when every person who rolls through the door, it's like, 'Yup, unvaccinated. Again.'"
