Credit: Gary Stone Pictured at the top of this page is charming photo of The Prince of Wales from c1913 when Chingford Hatch was just a small village . Records date the pub back to at least 1862 when the publican was Thomas Mills. He remained for almost 30 years. The site is now occupied by apartments This pub was rebuilt in 1939 and despite a major refurbishment in 2000 it eventually closed in August 2008 to make way for apartments. A view of St Mary;s Church from 1905. Credit: Gary Stone The view at the top of this page of St Mary's Church dates to around 1905. Built in 1871 by Thomas Henry Watson in a gothic style, the church has a small bell tower and was much extended with more community facilities in the early 2000s Loughton Post Office on the left moved to larger premises in Forest Road in 1908 to keep up with the growing demand, as the town continued to expand. Credit: Gary Stone - Instagram @loughtonhistory The picture above is from the turn of the 20th century and shows a spired building on High Beech Road that was designed by one of Loughton’s prominent architects Edmond Egan. Seen here as a bakery called Sandall’s, the building was finally used as a handyman’s shop before being demolished in 1970 to make way for a car park.
