Memorial Day, an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May, honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.
The first national commemoration of Memorial Day is reported as May 30,1868, However, African Americans began honoring fallen soldiers in May, 1865 in a commemoration that hasn't always gotten credit.
