LETHBRIDGE -- This year marks the 100th year since the poppy was adopted as Canada’s lasting symbol of remembrance and, in Lethbridge the occasion is being commemorated with two different projects. The Royal Canadian Legion General Stewart Branch, in partnership with the Alberta Branch of the Last Post Fund, are partnering to ensure veterans’ commitment and service is not forgotten by future generations. The Last Post Fund’s Unmarked Grave Program provides permanent military markers for eligible veterans who lie in unmarked graves. Local directors gathered at the Mountain View Cemetery Monday, where several headstones have been installed recently, providing long overdue recognition of the military service of some of the members who are buried there.
Battle of Vimy Ridge has local connection Poll Yes The Battle of Vimy Ridge has a distinct southern Alberta presence. As the four-day battle that occurred between April 9 and April 12, 1917 celebrates its 104th anniversary, Glenn Miller, Co chair, public relations for the General Stewart Branch #4, noted the local connections to the piece of World War 1 history. “It’s commemmorated across Canada. Locally, we have some Vimy Ridge connections here in southern Alberta,” he said. “Vimy Ridge Armoury, located beside the armoury where the militia train, was renamed from Kenyon Field Armoury in 2001 and there’s a monument just outside the front door.
Legion raising funds for roof repair Poll Yes The Royal Canadian Legion General Stewart Branch #4 is looking to put a roof over their heads. To replace the existing one, of course. The local branch has started up a Go Fund Me campaign to help pay for a new roof. The goal has been set for $20,000 to cover the cost for the immediate replacement of the lower roof with a deadline to reach the goal by May 31. The branch moved into the building in 1976 when it was a former Loblaws. Repairs to the main roof were conducted several years ago and the lower roof portions were in good shape at the time. Still, the need is immediate, and repairs are under way.
