NIH awards $5.59 million research grants to prevent and treat cerebral palsy

NIH awards $5.59 million research grants to prevent and treat cerebral palsy
The National Institutes of Health is supporting a Wayne State University School of Medicine physician-researcher s work at preventing and treating cerebral palsy in the form of two new five-year R01 grants worth a collective $5.59 million.
The principal investigator on both projects is Sidhartha Tan, M.D., professor and co-division chief of Neonatology in the Department of Pediatrics.
Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders that affect a person s ability to move and maintain balance and posture. CP is the most common motor disability in childhood, caused by abnormal brain development or damage to the developing brain that affects a person s ability to control his or her muscles. ....

New data shows that mINDY gene is involved in blood pressure regulation

New data shows that mINDY gene is involved in blood pressure regulation
Authors from the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) presented data showing that the longevity gene mammalian Indy (mINDY) is involved in blood pressure regulation in the
Journal of Clinical Investigation (JCI) insight.
Reduced expression of mINDY, which is known to extend the life span in lower organisms and to prevent diet induced obesity, fatty liver, and insulin resistance in mice, has now been shown to lower blood pressure and heart rate in rodents.
The authors provided mechanistic insights for the underlying physiological mechanism based on in vivo data in a genetic knockout model as well as microarray and in vitro studies. ....

Hybrid closed-loop insulin therapy improves glycemic control in adolescents, young adults

Hybrid closed-loop insulin therapy improves glycemic control in adolescents, young adults
Hybrid closed-loop insulin therapy improved glycemic control in adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes. These outcomes, derived from the International Diabetes Closed-Loop (iDCL) Trial, are reported in the peer-reviewed journal
Diabetes Technology & Therapeutics (DTT).
Adolescents and young adults with a mean age of 17 years were randomly assigned to a closed-loop control (CLC) insulin delivery system or a sensor augmented pump (SAP) with a continuous glucose monitoring system over a 6-month period. The Time in Range increased by 13% for the CLC group, compared to a decrease of 1% with SAP, for a group difference of +3.1 hours/day. This reflected a reduction in time spent at >180 mg/dL. The use of CLC was especially effective at increasing Time in Range overnight. ....

Genetic interactions may shed light on NGLY1 deficiency

Genetic interactions may shed light on NGLY1 deficiency
In 2012, four-year-old Bertrand Might became the first-ever patient diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called N-glycanase (NGLY1) deficiency. The discovery of this condition and Bertrand s diagnosis allowed doctors to look for other children with the same genetic defect. Since then, more than 60 additional patients have been found.
The disease affects every system of the body and is characterized by low muscle tone, seizures, developmental delays, and an inability to produce tears.
Sadly, Bertrand passed away in October at the age of 12. Although his life was cut short, his legacy will benefit children around the world. Through their website, NGLY1.org, Bertrand s parents collect and share a wealth of research and family stories to help educate and inform the community. As more patients have been identified, it s become apparent that even though the same gene is deactivated in all of them, their symptoms and s ....
