It was the heart that brought actor George Takei, 86, back to Arkansas for the 10th anniversary of the Japanese American Internment Museum at McGehee. More than 200 former internees, family members, and history buffs gathered to remember too. One former Rohwer internee, George Teraoka, will turn 102 this month.
A part of Arkansas history includes the 17,000 Japanese Americans who were forced to live in internment camps in 1942.
Three chartered buses took about 200 Japanese Americans on Thursday to McGehee's old train depot to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Japanese American Internment Museum.
Thursday's event featured a speech by George Takei of "Star Trek" fame, who was 5 years old when his family was at the camp in McGehee (named Rohwer). The other camp was in Jerome, Arkansas.
