National Guard Association Wants to Send Troops Home

The National Guard Association is calling on local law enforcement in the nation’s capital to take over for National Guard troops that have been guarding the U.S. Capitol since January.
“It’s time for local law enforcement to take it from here,” the National Guard Association (NGAUS) said in a statement.
“As General Hokanson stated in his memo earlier this month to senior Pentagon leaders, Guard officials had difficulty finding enough volunteers to continue the mission. This is not due to a reluctance to serve. Not hardly,”  NGAUS Chairman Maj. Gen. Michael McGuire and NGAUS President retired Brig. Gen. J. Roy Robinson said, referring to National Guard Bureau Chief Gen. Daniel R. Hokanson. ....

The George Floyd uprising that began in Minneapolis introduced the demand of defunding the police to the general public, empowered Black-led anti-police violence movements across the planet, generated policy changes in cities across the US, and most importantly built new organizations which have the capacity to fight for systemic change for the long haul. The uprising brought a lot of reforms and positive developments to its birth city, too, including a move to actually defund the Minneapolis police department and redistribute funds to services with a larger potential for eradicating both crime and poverty. A fourth and fifth juror has been chosen to decide the fate of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd, including one panelist who informed the court that fulfilling his civic duty might force him to postpone his planned wedding.
The jurors selected on Wednesday are a married man of color who works as an internet technology manager, and a data specialist for a nationwide sales management team who said he and his fiancée, a law school graduate, are planning to get married on May 1 in Florida. He said they have invited 30 family members to attend their nuptials, some of whom have already booked their flights. ....
