MSNBC The 11th Hour With Stephanie Ruhle July 7, 2024

good evening once again, i am stephanie ruhle. we have brand-new information this evening about the january 6th committee accusing former president donald trump of trying to contact a witness during the investigation. nbc news has confirmed reporting that the witness was a member of the white house support staff. at the end of yesterday s hearing liz cheney said that the matter had been referred to the justice department. this afternoon, the committee s chair person was asked about cheney s comments. are we going to hear from this witness? i would doubt it. we re concerned obviously about the witness, and we do not want to put that witness under unnecessary pressure. is there enough evidence that there was an attempt to influence the witness? from my vantage point, it is highly unusual to do that. that s why we, more or less, put that in the hands of the justice department. is this just one missed phone call from the former president? that s all i m aware of ....

insurrection. then we learned in great detail how trump himself caused it, all of it. tomorrow we ll watch the season finale when we will get the inside story of the 187 minutes donald trump spent reveling in the violence that he caused while doing nothing to stop it. that is what we begin tonight. over the last six weeks of these public hearings the january 6th committee has put forth an exhaustive record of not just just what happened on the day of the insurrection but everything leading up to it, spelling out the former president s scheme to sell the big lie, summon the mob and light the match of violence. they have accomplished that using live testimony from more than a dozen witnesses and recorded depositions from people who would know, republican former white house officials and members of the president s inner circle. his own legal team both in the white house and on the fringe all of whom paint a damning portrait of what the twice-impeached disgraced former pres ....

focused on violent military tactics. i want to bring in national security analyst, julia, a former department of homeland security assistant secretary and she is also the author of the devil never sleeps, learning to live in an age of disaster. thank you for coming on. as terrifying as the attack on the capital was, with this new information, do you get the sense that it could ve been much, much worse? absolutely. the amount of weaponry that the proud boys alone had, as well as the oath keepers, just suggests that they were ready for some sort of activity that would ve been much more violent than what we saw. then, the question is, why did that happen? and in some of the filings we have seen so far in particular, in the cases against the oath keepers, because remember, a number of the oath keepers have now pled, they have turned against leadership, so we are learning a lot about what the planning was, they were waiting for some moments, some triggers, some activation ....
