HAWTHORNE  An LGBTQ Pride flag was hoisted to the top of a pole on municipal land for the first time on Saturday, a milestone long coveted by local advocates.
It took a few moments for Mayor Richard Goldberg to raise the banner, but supporters said the effort was symbolic of the adversity that gay men, lesbians and transgender people have faced for decades.
The event, held on the lawn of the William B. Mawhinney Volunteer Ambulance Corps headquarters on Goffle Road, also was the latest achievement for a volunteer group that formed last June to promote LGBTQ rights in the borough. ....

HAWTHORNE  Six candidates, including two incumbents, are vying for half as many Republican nominations in a Borough Council primary on Tuesday.
Councilmen Bruce Bennett and Dominic Mele formed a team with Anna Marie Sasso, a real estate broker. They are being challenged by Michael Doyle, a former school board trustee, and Jay Shortway, whose family has owned the eponymous bar and restaurant on Goffle Road for decades.
Rounding out the crowded field is Philip Speulda, a retired businessman.

Hawthorne police cracked a string of business burglaries when they busted a recently paroled ex-con, authorities said.
Officers and detectives checking on local businesses over the weekend spotted Verler Mceachin, 59, of Paterson on Goffle Road, Detective Lt. Matthew Hoogmoed said Tuesday.
Mcheachin, who’s served state prison time for burglary, not only has quite a lengthy rap sheet in Bergen and Passaic counties.
He also fit the description of the burglar – and was already wanted on a parole violation.
As they approached him, Hoogmoed said, Mceachin tipped away into a vacant lot.
He was eventually taken into custody and charged with burglary, theft and criminal mischief, among other charges, the lieutenant said. ....

A Passaic woman who made headlines when her SUV plowed into the front of a Bronx gas station convenience store went on a rampage at a Hawthorne 7-Eleven that continued at police headquarters, authorities said Wednesday.
Police were called after Santa Moya, 23, stole cigarettes from the Goffle Road store and a clerk tried to stop her, Detective Lt. Matthew Hoogmoed said.
Moya was tangling with the employee in the parking lot when officers pulled up, he said.
The clerk s head was bleeding after some of her hair had been ripped out, a witness said.
Moya then “became irate and hostile towards officers, yelling obscenities,” Hoogmoed said. ....
