I published my first poem in 1988 in “Grain,” a literary journal of minor import in Saskatchewan. It was titled “Hermiston,” which is a small city in eastern Oregon not far from the Columbia River. My subject was the fate of migrant workers, something I knew about having worked as a tree planter in Washington State, a daffodil picker in northern California and as an inept machete-wielding cutter in the hops fields of southern Oregon.
