Proposed bill would reinstate the death penalty in Iowa

Des Moines, IA- A new bill proposed in the Iowa Senate would reinstate the death penalty in Iowa. The Iowa Capital Dispatch reports that the bill would allow a death sentence for murder in the first degree when it involves the kidnapping or sexual abuse of children. The bill was reintroduced to the Senate Judiciary Committee by State Senator Brad Zaun of Urbandale. Similar bills were introduced in 2019 and 2021 but never reached the Senate floor for a vote. Capital Punishment was abolished in Iowa by Governor Harold Hughes in 1965, and legislation to reinstate it has not been debated in the legislature since 1995. ....
