Hearings coming up next week on Granville school consolidations


OXFORD — Granville County school board members say they’re going to take two plans for G.C. Hawley Middle School and three possible scenarios for Creedmoor and Wilton Elementary to public hearings next week to gather input about the future of those schools.
Members agreed a decision about Hawley’s future has to be made immediately. They’ve raised the possibility of relocating and consolidating the school to a different building or reconfiguring grade levels and potentially closing it.
If Hawley Middle School is relocated, that may mean consolidating South Granville High School and Granville Central High school, effectively closing Granville Central. ....

Survey open on future of Granville County Public Schools


OXFORD — Granville County’s school board sent a video and web survey out to families about the possibility of consolidating schools.
The informational video explains the challenges the school district faces because of declining enrollment and the resulting financial issues. Board members say they need to find $1.7 million in annual savings to balance the system’s budget.
For the past 10 years, the school system has seen a decrease in enrollment due to more students enrolling in charter schools. In the video, officials said more than 17,000 students have left the district to attend charter schools, and as the school system loses students it loses funding from the state. ....

OXFORD — The city of Oxford has begun its search for a new police chief with Alvin Coley set to retire from the position on Aug. 1.
Coley has enjoyed building relationships with Oxford’s residents and leaders since taking over the police chief position in 2013 but he said that he is ready to start a new chapter in his life following a distinguished career in law enforcement.
“I’ve spent 34 years and 10 months in law enforcement, so it’s just time,” Coley said. “I want to spend some time with my family. After doing this for so long, I need to venture down some other avenues and kick back and relax a little bit.” ....
