As Wagner mercenaries staged a dramatic but short-lived uprising in Russia, a photo surfaced in Facebook posts that falsely claimed it showed Chinese President Xi Jinping in an "emergency meeting" to discuss the crisis. While China pledged to support Russia after the rebellion began, the picture was taken in September 2021, years before the mutiny in Russia. It shows Xi and China's top governing body meeting in Beijing for a reception on the eve of the country's national day.
