Golden Globes group vowed to change. What went wrong?

“D-day,” as some in the entertainment industry were calling it, was looming.
It was just two weeks before May 6, the date when the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. — the group that puts on the Golden Globes — had promised to unveil a slate of reforms aimed at “transformational change.” The pledge had come after a Times investigation highlighted allegations of financial and ethical lapses by the group and pointed out that not one of its 86 members is Black, spurring outrage in Hollywood.
On that April Tuesday, a handful of consultants for the embattled association met with a group of activists and publicists who’d been vocal in their criticism. The publicists represented a contingent of more than 100 powerful firms who’d declared that their clients would boycott the HFPA — refusing to participate in screenings, interviews or award shows — until the organization reformed. The activists included representatives from Color of Change and Time’s Up, including director Ava DuVernay and showrunner Shonda Rhimes.

HFPA diversity consultant quits after 'racist rhetoric' email

Shaun Harper, the diversity strategist hired by the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. last month, stepped away from the post on Tuesday, just weeks before the association was set to release a slate of reforms aimed at what the embattled organization has pledged as “transformational change.”
Harper, a professor of racial, gender and LGBTQ issues at USC’s Marshall School of Business, confirmed to The Times that he has left his role as the HFPA’s diversity consultant.
Harper declined to elaborate on his exit.
The HFPA did not respond to a request for comment.

Harper’s decision came on Tuesday, the same day he met on behalf of the HFPA with representatives of Time’s Up, Color of Change and a group of publicists who last month warned the HFPA they would cut the organization off if it did not take significant steps toward reform and transparency.

The organization that oversees the annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony removed a 44-year member and former president after he shared an article that called the Black Lives Matter organization racist.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association removed Philip Berk this week for sharing an article via email that called Black Lives Matter a “racist hate movement” and said it is "carrying on [Charles] Manson's work."
“Effective immediately, Phil Berk is no longer a member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association,” the group said in a Tuesday statement, according to the
Los Angeles Times.
Berk, 88, reportedly sent the email to association members and staff, as well as the group’s general counsel and chief operating officer, Gregory Goeckner, the outlet reported on Sunday.
