the woods yet. countless passengers had their travel plans -- when the storms moved up and down the east coast. some like up on their flights today. the faa says that we still could see some ground stops, as the day goes on. so the number of cancellations yesterday puts it in the top five since memorial day. 1700 flight cancellations in the u.s., about a third of all flights canceled, 8800 and the u.s. putting passengers on average an hour ten minutes late getting to the destination. the worst airport is at the, new york laguardia, followed by reagan international airport then newark and charlotte, for american airlines. but it's really thought the airlines and took it on the turn. it delayed a third of all its flights in the u.s., more than 1300. now, it is a positive passenger saying that it's working to get schedule back on track, although we'll see as the day goes on, and these ground stops

flights today. laguardia, 200 flights. the worst weather in new york city comes in after the evening rush. now let's take you live to cleveland. look at the snow out here. talk about a white-out. we've got winds here on the lake front gusting to 43 miles an hour. it's 22 degrees. the windchill is 6. then in chicago, where we've had a bit of an overachiever the top number there coming in 18 inches of snow. most of the morning, midway and o'hare were under ground stops. over 1,000 flights canceled since monday. more to come tomorrow. so it's been bad there, but the snow is going to be winding down there. the worst of the weather, again, in the northeast. new york hartford boston will be this evening, overnight. tomorrow, the snow wraps up. on saturday morning, the coldest temperatures in central park and new york in about ten years, going down to about 3 degrees. here in boston monday morning will be down to 3 below zero one off the record and their coldest in about three winters.

the cnn weather center. he joins us now. what's going on, chad? >> let me explain what ground stop means to the lay person out there that doesn't get this. this means that if you're on an airplane and you're wanting to fly to laguardia and you're somewhere around the new york city metro area, your plane is going to sit there on the tarmac waiting for this ground stop to leave. not everywhere, planes can still leave from far away destinations like l.a. and phoenix, those places, but the close destinations have to hold, they have to sit there and not try to get in the air because they don't want them spinning around. baltimore, you see all the ground stops. let me get to the delays, because this is what's really put you at unease. 45 minutes, bwi. laguardia, two hours. newark, 90 minutes. philadelphia, one hour. d.c.a., 90 minutes. there's one right here, ground delays in boston at an hour. newark, jfk at three hours and 25 minutes right now. and the storms aren't even to new york city yet but it's been windy. i know you just showed those
