Big names to headline Challenge Race in Canary Islands next weekend
What do Jan Frodeno, Patrick Lange, and Daniela Ryf have in common? Other than nine Ironman World Championship titles among them, they’re all anticipated to race at Anfi Challenge Mogán Gran Canaria next weekend. Frodeno and Lange both confirmed their race plans on the start list via Instagram this week, while late last month Ryf alluded to getting in “hilly miles” in preparation for the undulating course on Spain’s Gran Canaria, part of the Canary Island archipelago off the coast of Western Sahara. (The course covers Challenge’s half distance, which is a 1900 meter swim, 90K bike, 21K run). Other names to watch on Carnia’s start list? Multiple Ironman champ Nils Frommhold on the men’s side as well as Ryf’s Swiss compatriot Nicola Spirig and Sweden’s Lisa Norden, both of whom on a great day could potentially challenge the reigning world champ.

Hastings trainer John Bary is keen to tackle black type races now with last week's impressive Wanganui winner Serena.
The 4-year-old Swiss Ace mare capped off a string of minor placings with a decisive three-quarter length victory in a Rating 74 race over 1340m.
That success followed three thirds and a second from her last four starts, the most recent of those runs being a close second behind Dawn Jessie over 1600m at Hastings on New Year's Day.

A wide draw and a step up in class couldn’t hold down underrated mare Showoroses as she led from go to whoa to take out the Group 2 Rich Hill Mile (1600m) at Ellerslie.
The Joanne Surgenor-trained four-year-old had employed similar tactics against her own sex when taking out the Group 2 Cal Isuzu Stakes (1600m) at Te Rapa last month.
Friday’s contest pitted her against the best of the boys as well, with rider Vinnie Colgan once again seizing the initiative after Showoroses worked her way to the lead inside the opening 300m.
Colgan let his charge bowl along without a care in the world before applying the pressure from the 600m. Asked for a serious effort in the straight, Showoroses established a winning break before clinging gamely to her lead to score by a length from Demonetization with New Plymouth visitor Coventina Bay a nose back in third.
