THE Irish supermarket sector is booming. In Ireland, consumers spent an additional €2bn in groceries alone as lockdowns ensured our lives were ever more centred around eating at home.
Despite 2020 becoming the year for online shops, click and collect, farmers’ markets, and alternative food networks such as Neighbourfood, it is the so-called Big Five supermarkets that still take the lion’s share of our grocery spend.

There are many famous foods that have Protected Geographical Indication status; parma ham, champagne, and our own Waterford Blaa. Hopefully soon Ireland can add another to that list - boxty!
Aine Faughnan's family have been making Dromod Boxty in Leitrim for the last 30 years, and after winning the Grow With Aldi competition last year they have brought the potato dish nationwide.
Boxty goes back to the 1700's and originates from Leitrim, Cavan, Sligo, and Mayo. It declined during the famine, but has stayed a staple in these counties.

With the loss of charity events this year companies are coming up with new ways of giving back through their sales.
As part of our Boost My Business initiative Fiona Alston spoke to four companies who are playing their part by applying social responsibility to their small businesses.
Emmett Kerrigan and Keith Loftus learned all about kombucha while living in Canada - they were running a landscape construction company in Vancouver. On their return to Ireland, they decided they wanted to bring their new healthy lifestyles with them and create a company from it.
