CM cancels relevant officials' leave in view of rain emergency

Sindh’s chief minister has ordered the cancellation of leave of all the employees of the district administration, the police and the local bodies, and other essential staff, directing the chief secretary to set up a rain emergency cell at his office for the necessary coordination.
Syed Murad Ali Shah took these decisions on Wednesday during a meeting that he chaired at the CM House to discuss the rain emergency and review the monsoon preparations.
Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Director General Salman Shah told the meeting that the Pakistan Meteorological Department had issued Outlook for Monsoon 2021 (July to September), under which rainfall was expected to remain near to normal. He said the area’s weighted normal rainfall of Pakistan between July and September was 140.8mm. ....

KARACHI: While a few areas of Karachi received rain early on Wednesday morning, light showers in several other areas in the evening turned the city’s prevailing hot and humid weather pleasant.
The Met department has forecast hot and humid weather with chances of rain-thunderstorms at evening/night in Karachi for Thursday with maximum temperature ranging between 36 degrees Celsius and 38 degrees Celsius.
On Wednesday, the maximum temperature in the city was 39.7 degrees Celsius.
The Met department recorded 2mm rain each in Gulshan-i-Hadeed, PAF Masroor Base and Jinnah terminal. It recorded 1.6mm rain at Karachi University/Met complex, 0.7mm in the old Airport area, 1.1mm at PAF Base Faisal while North Karachi and Saadi Town had traces of rainfall. ....

Karachi anti-encroachment verdict: SC urged to form larger bench

The Supreme Court has been moved with a plea seeking larger bench formation to revisit its verdict under which directives were issued to demolish Gujjar and Orangi nullahs in Karachi.
Earlier, on June 14, heading a three-member bench the Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Gulzar Ahmed had dismissed application filed by some people affected during the anti-encroachment operation around Gujjar and Orangi Town nullahs and directed the authorities to continue the operation.
Seeking a review of the Supreme Court over June 14 order, counsel for the petitioner Advocate Faisal Siddiqi requested for the constitution of a larger bench to hear the review petition. ....

Families file review application in SC against house demolitions

Families affected by the operation of clearing the Gujjar and Orangi storm water drains of encroachments have filed a review application in the Supreme Court against demolitions of their houses and dispossession of land without any immediate substantive compensation or temporary rehabilitation.
The SC had ordered the Sindh government, the National Disaster Management Authority and the Karachi administrator on June 14 to ensure that the land of the nullahs and the rights of way are cleared, and the occupants of the land are suitably compensated and rehabilitated.
The petitioners’ counsel Faisal Siddiqui said in the review plea that the consequence of the impugned order was the continuation of demolitions of thousands of houses, buildings and structures, and the dispossession of over 50,000 people without any immediate substantive compensation or temporary rehabilitation. ....
