The Sindh High Court extended on Tuesday the stay on demolitions of leased houses near storm water drains till June 1.
Hearing a set of pleas filed against the razing of leased properties during anti-encroachment operations, a two-member bench, comprising Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi and Justice Rashida Asad, expressed annoyance at the Sindh government and the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation for their failure to answer the court s questions.
The high court had earlier directed the relevant authorities and the petitioners to seek clarification from the Supreme Court as to whether leased houses could be considered encroachments. ....

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court extended on Tuesday its earlier restraining order against the demolition of leased properties around Gujjar and Orangi nullahs till June 1.
The two-judge SHC bench headed by Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi ruled that the authorities concerned be allowed to obtain appropriate orders from the Supreme Court, after a provincial law officer and counsel for the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) said that they were not aware of any order of the SC regarding cancellation of leases of the properties in question. ....

The warnings issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department in light of a cyclonic storm in the southeast Arabian Sea and consequent rainfall forecast in Karachi have spurred the city government into action.
Although the PMD has stated in its latest advisory that threat posed by impending Cyclone Tauktae to Sindh’s coastal belt has diminished and that Karachi is more likely to experience hot weather and dust storms than heavy rainfall in the coming days, officials say that these preparations will be useful in the upcoming monsoon season. ....

KARACHI:
The cleaning of storm water drains in Karachi is in full swing, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) claimed on Sunday following the looming threat of cyclone Tauktae hitting Balochistan and Sindh in the coming days.
According to the authority s spokesperson,14,900 tonne of garbage had been removed from the Mahmoodabad drain so far, whereas 153,031 tonne of garbage had been disposed of from the Orangi drain and 73,550 from the Gujjar Nullah. ....
