特别是退休后仍然尽力关心同事。如眼睛不好的非常瘦弱的翁珍玲教师，经常看望，并陪她在附近散步，一直到完全失明不能出去为止。她是唯一在美国看过我的我们教研室的同事。她邀我一起去马里兰州看过1953年中山大学来我室工作的丘玉甫老师，他在美国搞计算数学很有成就。那天陈平也去了。几十年不见，由廖老师把大家联系了起来。
我觉得她有一位非常好的丈夫，刘慎权，是她的定心丸，是她最大的支撑，他们俩是同学，刘先生抗美援朝时参过军，复员后上大学，毕业后留苏搞计算数学，在中科院计算所工作，文革后访问美国，是业务能力很强的一把手，又做党的工作，是双肩挑的干部。在中国时我没有和他有过接触，来美后，和他当面的简短接触，感觉待人真诚、与人和善。他们俩相沐与共60多载，现在两人都在90岁左右，非常健康。廖老师仍然永不停止地关心周围朋友。
文革后期我带工农兵学员到成都实习前一天，得了重感冒，看了学校李中医，服中药后浮肿得双眼睁不开，由于第二天就要上火车，没有时间再去看李中医，只好晚上请廖老师帮忙，让我到成都后能请她父亲，著名老中医，诊治一下。
当时和我同去的老师余梅笙、柯明杨、张洪都为我担心。到成都安置后第一件事这三位男老师陪我去看著名老中医，医生看了李医生的药单后告诉我他少了一味药，造成水排不出。马上给我开了药，鼓励我说马上会好。果不其然，服药后第二天，就消肿了，恢复正常，共吃了两服药。令人难以置信，这三位老师都惊讶之极。本来他们认为我的浮肿会持续在整个出差期间，也做好准备让我提前回校。没想一天就好了。太神了这位著名的廖老中医。
