Hornby residents stop liquor store plan after authorities fail to object

The decision said the proposed store, to have been called Good Bliss Liquor and run under the Thirsty Liquor franchise at 299 Main South Rd, would have caused more than minor harm to the community.
It said the applicants were “in complete denial of the vulnerability of the location” and had “no real plan” to manage issues.

Mark Peters, Mike Mora, Marc Duff, and Ross Houliston are pleased after successfully opposing a liquor licence application in Hornby.
Objectors listed existing problems in the area including public and domestic violence, drug dealing, vandalism, addiction, driving behaviour, littering and other social nuisances. One expressed shock that there were already 31 on-licences and off-licences in the Hornby area.

Shutting Christchurch pool where champions have trained 'shortsighted'

Suzi de Gouveia, principal of St Teresa's School, said the decision was “shortsighted”.
The school is 1.1km from the pool, meaning students and staff can attend swimming lessons without transport costs.

Roof trusses go up at Christchurch's long-awaited Metro Sports Facility.
“It’s a great resource. We can walk there and students can have lessons there and become safer in the water,” she said.
“We are backing the campaign and encouraging our parents to do so.”
She said it may not be possible for them to travel to Parakiore when it opens.
“If you have to add transport costs, schools have limited budgets. I don’t know what we will do.”

Bid to add iconic 1974 Commonwealth Games logo to Christchurch's Denton Park

Colin Simon's logo of the 1974 Commonwealth Games.
Ross Houliston, the residents’ association research and submissions officer, said they wanted to add the logo to the Denton Park grandstand “to try and bring a bit of pride into the area and a bit of pride back to Christchurch”.
The residents’ association has asked the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board to fund the idea.
The council's acting head of community support, governance and partnerships, Gary Watson, said the residents’ association and the board’s governance team would develop the proposal further.
The board had a discretionary response fund, which the council hoped could fund the project.

In-house fighting, naughty words or bad behaviour, ignoring privacy rules or simply rubbing their council colleagues the wrong way.
These are just some of the reasons behind the numerous complaints elected members have faced so far this term.
