A MUNTINLUPA City court on Wednesday, February 17, 2021, acquitted detained Senator Leila de Lima of one of three illegal drug trading charges, four years after these were filed.
The Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court Branch 205 granted De Lima’s demurrer to evidence, which is tantamount to her acquittal in case number 17-166.
De Lima was accused of benefiting from the drug money and vehicles that her co-accused, Jose Adrian “Jad” Dera, demanded from convicted drug lord Peter Co during the 2016 elections.
The money allegedly came from proceeds of illegal drug trading inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP).

De Lima: Acquittal in one drug case is a victory

Senator Leila De Lima
“To be acquitted even in just one case, in the time of Duterte, is a victory,” DeLima, a staunch critic of the administration, said in a statement.
A Muntinlupa City court earlier acquitted the opposition senator on one of three drug cases she is facing but the court denied her bid to dismiss another one.
De Lima is facing two conspiracies to commit illegal drug trading cases filed before the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court Branch 205, in which the senator filed a demurrer to both cases.
In two separate orders, the Muntinlupa RTC Branch 205 Judge Liezel Aquiatan granted De Lima’s demurrer to evidence in the case where her co-accused is her nephew Jose Dera.

Reinventing Age-Old Crafts in Southeast Asia

Indonesia is the world’s largest producer of natural rattan, and inexpensive furniture made from the vine-like plant is, unsurprisingly, ubiquitous across the archipelago. But not all rattan designs are created equal; Jakarta-based product designer Alvin Tjitrowirjo, for one, elevates and reinterprets the humble material under his eponymous alvinT label. Working with local artisans, he explores rattan’s versatility by dyeing it with color injections, bending it into unconventional shapes, or combining woven rattan panels with luxe materials like leather and marble. alvin-t.com

R for Repair exhibition features toothy seashell and storytelling clock radio
Ten designers have created new pieces from broken objects, including a clock radio that tells stories and a seashell that has been given an eerily realistic tongue and teeth, for the R for Repair exhibition in Singapore.
Curator Hans Tan chose a selection of designers for the project, which was commissioned by the DesignSingapore Council and aims to show how repairing discarded items can help us change how we think about waste.
"Being a designer-maker in Singapore where natural resources are scarce and craft fabrication practices hard to come by, the use of waste and found objects has been a common thread in my own works," said Tan, who teaches sustainability and design at the National University of Singapore.
