When news of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor spread throughout the United States, 16-year-old Robert A. Madden of St. Louis County was energized with the desire to serve his country. It would be two years before he would reach the age to volunteer and embark upon a military career punctuated by his imprisonment during the Korean War.
