CPO Carl R. McPherson USN Ret. 1942 – 2021 TOPSHAM – Chief Petty Officer Carl R. McPherson, US Navy Retired, 79, passed away peacefully at home Monday, June 7, 2021 surrounded by his family. He succumbed to lung cancer after being diagnosed in March of 2020. The son of James McPherson and Ona (Hartman) McPherson, Carl was born March 9, 1942 in Northumberland, Pa. He was a 1960 graduate of Northumberland High School. He later studied Horticulture at Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute. On August 20, 1966, he married Patricia O’Donnell of Portland with whom he shared the rest of his life, a wonderful 54 years. Carl enlisted in the US Navy in 1960 and retired in 1980 as a Chief Petty Officer. He served in several squadrons, including his favorites, VP-23 in Brunswick and VXE-6 in Quonset, R.I., where he served two deployments in Antarctica and fulfilled a lifelong dream of visiting the South Pole. After his military service, Carl worked for the Naval Aviation Engineering Service Unit (NAESU) with his friend, Harry Leonard, until his retirement in 2003. Not content with retired life, he continued to work seasonally at L.L.Bean for a number of years. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. He loved large family gatherings and was always happy to invent an “occasion” to celebrate. In order to spend more time with his children and grandchildren, he organized an annual trip “upta camp,” which has become a fond annual tradition. Carl was an avid gardener, spending many hours tending his extensive flower beds and vegetable gardens. He enjoyed sharing his passion with neighbors and family and passed his love of gardening on to his sons. In his forties, Carl had the pleasure of learning how to play the Scottish bagpipes. He performed throughout the state for a number of years with the Kora Highlanders Pipe and Drum Band. He was a lifelong member of Northumberland Fire Company #1. He was a Freemason and a member of the Kora Shriners. He served as a S.A.D. #75 School Board Member and was instrumental in the site selection for Woodside Elementary School. Carl is survived by his wife, Patricia, of Topsham; son, John and wife Dee of Brunswick; son, Aaron and wife Dawn of Falmouth; son, Devin and wife Helen of Fort Worth, Texas; grandchildren, Seth, Alec, Sean, Katelyn, Ryan, Clarendon, Charlotte, and Matilda; and great-grandchildren, Arrabella and Julian. He is also survived by his sister, Romayne “Kate” McPherson, brother, Robert “Pat” McPherson and wife Joyce, and sister-in-law Anita McPherson. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James and Carman and sisters, Shirley and Marian “Peck”. Visiting hours will be held Friday, June 11 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Stetson’s Funeral Home 12 Federal, Brunswick. A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 12 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mount Vernon Rd., Augusta at a later date. Bob Peterson, Sequanna Taylor become leaders of MPS school board


Milwaukee Public Schools board members on Tuesday elected Bob Peterson as president and Sequanna Taylor as vice president of the board for the next year. 
Peterson, who has been on the board since 2019, previously served as president of the Milwaukee Teachers' Education Association, the union for MPS staff. He is also on the editorial board for "Rethinking Schools," a magazine he helped found.  
Peterson started working for MPS in 1977 as a paraprofessional. After earning his teaching degree, he taught for 30 years and co-founded La Escuela Fratney, according to the MPS website. He earned a master's degree in curriculum instruction with an emphasis on bilingual education from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and a doctorate with a dissertation on anti-racist teaching from Cardinal Stritch University.

About half of Milwaukee voters will elect new school board members April 6, with no incumbents running for four open seats.
Two of the races have only one candidate on the ballot: Walker’s Point Center for the Arts executive director Marcela Garcia for the south side District 6 seat now held by Tony Baez; and recently retired Milwaukee Public Schools teacher Harry Leonard for the southwest District 7 seat held by Paula Phillips. 
The north side District 4 seat is contested between Silver Spring Neighborhood Center Opportunity Youth Program Director Aisha Carr and North Side Rising organizer Dana Kelley. 
Running for District 5 on the east side are Alex Brower, director of Wisconsin Alliance for Retired Americans; and Jilly Gokalgandhi, Equity in Education team member at American Family Insurance Institute.

MPS board candidates discuss race, privilege ahead of April 6 election


In a forum focused on race and equity, Milwaukee Public Schools board candidates sought to distinguish themselves in a field where all candidates have talked about the need to move toward restorative justice, diversify staff and curriculum, and listen more to students. 
Students were among those asking questions at the forum Wednesday hosted by the youth-led group Leaders Igniting Transformation along with the ACLU of Wisconsin, Milwaukee Inner-city Congregations Allied for Hope (MICAH) and Black Educators Caucus MKE. 
Four of eight seats on the board are up for election April 6, with no incumbents in the races:
District 4: The two candidates who advanced from the primary election are Silver Spring Neighborhood Center Opportunity Youth Program Director Aisha Carr and North Side Rising organizer Dana Kelley. Incumbent Annie Woodward was taken off the ballot due to problems with her nomination papers.

In the primary race for state superintendent of schools, former Brown Deer superintendent Deborah Kerr and Pecatonica superintendent Jill Underly declared victories Tuesday night, pitting them against each other in the general election April 6.
In Milwaukee, four candidates will advance to the general election for two contested seats on the school board. With some absentee ballots yet uncounted, Aisha Carr and Dana Kelley led in District 4; and Alex Brower and Jilly Gokalgandhi led in District 5. Brower and Kelley ran on a socialist slate together backed by the teachers union.

In Wisconsin's primary election Tuesday, only one contest will be on every ballot: the race for the state school superintendent, a position held for over a decade by Gov. Tony Evers and his appointed successor. 
Some Milwaukee voters will also make selections for school board positions and a county board seat.

SOUTH BEND, IN -- Steven Homer Prince, 75, passed away on December 6, 2020 at Beacon Memorial Hospital in South Bend, from complications of COVID-19. Steve was born June 24,1945 in Massena, New York, to Harry Leonard and Helen Lucy (Farnsworth) Prince. His father was the editor of the Massena Courier Observer for 40 years. Steve graduated from Massena High School in 1963.
He attended Cornell and Clarkston Universities, graduating in 1968 with a bachelor’s degree in economics. Additionally, he graduated from Purdue University with a master’s degree in economics.
After graduating he followed in his father’s footsteps and decided to pursue a career in the newspaper business. Steve retired from the South Bend Tribune in 2008 after 33 years.
